The discovery of neurological relationships and “reflex” motor reactions date as far back as the 1800‘s.  It was in the early-mid 1900‘s, that physiotherapist Eunice Ingham along with Dr. William Fitzgerald and Dr. Joe Shelby Riley pioneered the development and discovery of Zone Therapy and Reflexology maps, resembling the shape of the human body in the feet and hands.  While reflexology is most commonly presented in the feet and hands, it was Dr. Paul Nogier of France in 1957 who discovered a map of the body within the ears.  Images and diagrams are shown with the shape of an upside down baby (in fetal position) superimposed on the outer ears.

While there are many different techniques, philosophies and terminology correlated to work on the feet.  They seem to have been used globally (most notably in Asia, Germany, Denmark, France, Spain & Egypt) and could potentially date back as far as 5000 years ago, however this footwork was not known as “Reflexology.”  The Flocco Method of integrated foot, hand and ear reflexology was introduced in the early 80’s, and has been gradually gaining recognition since.  We now know, that by working all three (feet, hands & ears together) has more powerful results.  By then applying what’s referred to as “priority reflexing” (where to work first or second) based on the client’s area of stress, we are more quickly and effectively reducing pain and helping in the restoration of the body’s natural balance.
